Dubai makes stringent penalties through new traffic laws: Fines up to $13,600 and deportation for traffic violations
The new traffic laws in Dubai introduced stricter punishments and fines for violation of traffic rules for motorists. This new law was issued by the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The new laws hiked the fine up to AED50, 000, about $13,600, and contained the provision for deportation of expat motorists in the city. This has come into effect from July 6th, 2023.
What are the new laws about?
Reports suggested that the Prime Minister had changed Decree No. 29 of 2015. The newly issued Decree No.30 of 2023 has placed several penalties, including deportation for traffic violations. The acceptable amount varies as per the reasons for the impounded vehicles.
A penalty of AED50, 000 ($13,600) is imposed for the impounded vehicles for the following reasons:
- Driving a vehicle by persons below 18 years of age
- Crossing a signal without minding red lights
- Driving recreational motorcycles on paved roads
- Driving with a fake license plate
- Driving a vehicle more than the permissible speed limit
- Driving recklessly in a way that may cause harm to the public
- Intentionally running into a police vehicle
To release an impounded vehicle for any of the above reasons, a person must pay the fine amount. However, there is a lesser fine for releasing impounded vehicles for some reason. They include driving without a license plate, running away from the police due to traffic violations, substantially modifying vehicles, particularly for increased speed or noise, and having an opaque window or exceeding the permissible tint percentage on a window. The fine amount for the above reasons is AED10, 000 ($2,720).
The traffic laws also impose stringent fines of AED100, 000 ($27,200) for impounded vehicles involved in a road race without prior approval from the authorities concerned.
After paying the fine amount, the vehicle owners must wait the minimum time allotted to release their impounded vehicles. The vehicles will be released only if the entire fine amount is settled without any pending, fulfilled any remedy as required by the Dubai Police, and any other conditions they put forth.
So what about the non-resident motorists who violate traffic laws?
The new traffic laws have provisions for expat heavy vehicle drivers who violate Dubai traffic laws. Heavy vehicle drivers, non-UAE nationals, will be deported from the UAE if they violate the red traffic signal.
These new laws made the punishments more stringent. This can be due to several traffic violations and unlawful motor races reported in Dubai City recently.
