- Car registration renewal is the annual process that extends the validity of your Mulkiya card – the official document proving your vehicle is registered, insured and road-worthy in the UAE. Under Federal Traffic Law, registrations are valid for one year; they must be renewed before the due date shown on the Mulkiya
Why it matters:
Confirms your car has valid insurance that meets minimum third-party liability requirements.
Verifies the vehicle has passed a safety inspection (for cars older than three years or those with overdue registration).
Allows authorities to update any outstanding fines and owner details in the traffic system
Failing to renew exposes you to automatic traffic fines, inability to claim insurance in case of an accident and possible seizure of the vehicle. Renewing on time keeps you compliant and fully protected
Gather the required documents
Emirates ID (original and copy)
Previous Mulkiya or digital copy in the UAE Pass / authority app
Valid
UAE car insurance certificate (minimum 13 months cover)
Vehicle test certificate (if applicable)
Settle outstanding fines
All traffic tickets linked to the plate number must be paid before the system will accept a renewal request.
Vehicle inspection
If the car is more than 3 years old, book a passing test at an authorised centre such as Tasjeel, Shamil, ADNOC or Tamam
Cars younger than 3 years usually skip the test unless the registration has lapsed for over 6 months
